How to use the stat sheet
Type each player's counting stats into one row. Leave a box empty if it does not apply, such as pitching stats for a player who did not pitch. The results table shows batting average, on base percentage, slugging, OPS, ERA and WHIP for each player and for the team.
- PA and AB: fill in either. If AB is empty, it is found from PA.
- H is total hits. 2B, 3B and HR are the extra base hits inside that total.
- IP, ER, H allowed and BB allowed are for pitchers only.
Why team totals are not an average of averages
Say one player goes 1 for 2 and another goes 30 for 100. Their averages are .500 and .300. The mean of those is .400, but the team really went 31 for 102, which is .304. The sheet adds hits and at bats first, then divides. It also adds innings as outs, so 2.1 plus 3.2 comes out to 6.0.
Formulas used
AVG = H ÷ AB
OBP = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF)
SLG = Total bases ÷ AB
OPS = OBP + SLG
ERA = ER × Game innings ÷ IP
WHIP = (BB + H allowed) ÷ IP
These follow Rule 9.21 of the Official Baseball Rules. Each formula has its own page with worked examples: ERA, WHIP, batting average, slugging and OPS.
Printing
Press Print. The menu and buttons are hidden, and the input boxes print as plain text, so you get a clean sheet for the dugout or a team meeting.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave at bats blank?
Yes. If AB is blank and PA is filled in, the sheet finds at bats by taking away walks, HBP, sacrifice flies and sacrifice bunts.
How are team totals worked out?
The sheet adds the counting stats first, then works out each rate from the totals. It does not average the players' averages, since that would give the wrong answer.
