How do you calculate OPS?

Add on base percentage and slugging percentage. First find OBP with the official formula. Then find slugging as total bases per at bat. For example, a .386 OBP plus a .510 slugging percentage gives an .896 OPS. Round each part to three places only at the end.

OPS = OBP + SLG

The MLB.com OPS entry says it joins how well a hitter gets on base with how well he hits for average and power.

How do you calculate on base percentage?

Add hits, walks and hit by pitch. Divide by the sum of at bats, walks, hit by pitch and sacrifice flies. This is the official formula in Rule 9.21(f). With 155 hits, 60 walks, 5 HBP, 500 at bats and 5 sacrifice flies, OBP is 220 ÷ 570 = .386.

OBP = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF)

See the MLB.com OBP entry and the Official Baseball Rules.

Worked example, step by step

Use the sample line above. Singles are 155 minus 55 extra base hits, which is 100. Total bases are 100 + 60 + 15 + 80 = 255. Slugging is 255 ÷ 500 = .510. OBP is .386. OPS is .896. We add the unrounded values, then round, so the total can differ by .001 from adding the rounded parts.

What is a good OPS?

The MLB league OPS was .719 in 2025, .711 in 2024 and .734 in 2023, per Baseball-Reference. A hitter above about .735 was better than the league in each of those years. Youth and high school numbers vary by league.

Frequently asked questions

Why are sacrifice bunts left out of OBP?

Rule 9.21(f) lists at bats, walks, hit by pitch and sacrifice flies in the bottom of the fraction. Sacrifice bunts are not on that list, so they do not count for or against OBP.

Does reaching on an error help OBP?

No. Reaching on an error counts as an at bat with no hit, so it lowers OBP. Rule 9.21(f) also says to ignore times a batter reaches on interference or obstruction.

Can OPS be over 1?

Yes. OBP and SLG are added, so OPS often tops 1.000 for the best hitters. MLB.com lists Babe Ruth first all time in AL and NL history with a 1.164 career OPS.

Is OPS used for pitchers?

Yes. When you use it for the hitters a pitcher faced, it is called OPS against.
