How do you calculate batting average?
Divide hits by at bats. Round to three decimal places and drop the leading zero. For example, 45 hits in 150 at bats is 45 ÷ 150 = .300. Rule 9.21(b) of the Official Baseball Rules says to use hits, not total bases, so a home run counts the same as a single here.
AVG = Hits ÷ At bats

How do you find at bats from plate appearances?
Start with plate appearances. Take away walks, hit by pitch, sacrifice flies, sacrifice bunts and times reached on catcher interference. What is left is at bats. For example, 40 plate appearances with 5 walks, 1 HBP and 1 sacrifice fly gives 33 at bats.
AB = PA minus BB minus HBP minus SF minus SH minus Interference
This follows Rule 9.02(a)(1) and the MLB.com at bat entry. A plate appearance is every time a batter finishes a turn.
Worked example
A high school hitter has 62 plate appearances, 8 walks, 2 HBP, 1 sacrifice fly and 3 sacrifice bunts. At bats are 62 minus 14, which is 48. With 17 hits, the average is 17 ÷ 48 = .354.
What is a good batting average?
In MLB the league batting average was .245 in 2025, .243 in 2024 and .248 in 2023, per Baseball-Reference. So a hitter above .250 was better than the league in each of those years. Youth and high school averages vary by league.
| Season | AVG | OBP | SLG |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | .245 | .315 | .404 |
| 2024 | .243 | .312 | .399 |
| 2023 | .248 | .320 | .414 |

Batting average leaves things out
Batting average ignores walks and treats every hit the same. To give credit for walks, use OBP and OPS. To give credit for power, use slugging percentage.
Frequently asked questions
Does a walk count as an at bat?
No. Walks, hit by pitch, sacrifice bunts, sacrifice flies and catcher interference are plate appearances but not at bats. They do not change batting average.
Does reaching on an error count as a hit?
No. It counts as an at bat with no hit, so it lowers batting average. The scorer decides if a ball was a hit or an error.
Do you round or cut off batting average?
Round to three places. A hitter with 0.2996 shows as .300. The leading zero is dropped by custom, so it reads .300, not 0.300.
Is a fielder's choice an at bat?
Yes. The batter is charged with an at bat and no hit, so a fielder's choice lowers batting average.
